U.S. Representative Ed Royce (R-Fullerton) released the following statement on the tentative agreement reached between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) to end labor negotiations and temporary stoppages at West Coast ports:
“The tentative agreement between the shipping companies and the longshoremen is sorely needed by California businesses and workers who have suffered immensely during port slowdowns. I commend the White House on joining the efforts of local leaders to broker a deal and look forward to continuing to advocate for the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.”
On January 30, 2015, Rep. Royce was joined by dozens of members of the U.S. House of Representatives in writing a letter to both ILWU President Robert McEllrath and Pacific Maritime Association Chairman and CEO James McKenna that urged both parties to resolve their differences in an effort to avoid a port shutdown. Royce also contacted both sides of the dispute last December with a bipartisan California Congressional delegation letter that highlighted the economic ramifications that a port shutdown will have on California businesses and workers.
