Quirk-Silva Honors Marilyn Harris as the 65th District’s Veteran of the Year
SACRAMENTO – Yesterday, Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton) recognized Marilyn Harris as the 2014 Veteran of the Year for 65th Assembly District.
“As Chair of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee, it is such an honor to be able to acknowledge those who gave so much to our Nation. I am truly humbled by Marilyn Harris’ selfless service not only overseas but also at home. She encompasses courage, compassion and the relentless spirit of a true American hero,” stated Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva.
Marilyn Harris is a Distinguished Military Graduate of Methodist College in North Carolina. She served on active duty in the US Army as an Aviation Officer from July 1983 to June 1993. During her career with the Army, Harris served as a Brigade Administrative Officer, Group Force Modernization Officer, Battalion Administrative Officer, Battalion Intelligence Officer, Operational Testing Officer, Company Executive Officer, and a Scout Platoon Leader. Harris’ immeasurable accolades include two Army Commendation Medals and two Army Achievement medals.
Since returning from military service, Harris has devoted her time and energy to give back to the veteran community. She is a committed school volunteer and is an active member of the American Legion Post 142, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11390, the Red Cross, US Army Reserve Family Readiness, the Orange County Veterans and Military Families Collaborative, and the Veteran Advisory Council of Orange County.
“The history of our Nation, from the very beginning, is tied to patriots serving their Country. The traditions surrounding the Armed Forces are both thought provoking and speak to the very essence of our great Nation. The men and women, who have served and are serving our Country, are heroes. We serve for many reasons, but the best of these reasons, is that we see a bright future and care about not only our Nation, but freedom for all nations of the world who seek it. I am honored and humbled to be recognized for both my service to our Nation and for the community volunteer work that I do,” said Harris.
The 7th Annual Veteran of the Year Luncheon was hosted at the Sacramento Convention Center by the California State Assembly Veterans Committee to honor outstanding veterans from across the state.
