Orange County Proclaims Local Emergency in Response to La Habra Earthquake
SILVERADO CANYON, Calif. – (April 4, 2014) – Today, the Vice Chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors proclaimed a local emergency following the March 28th La Habra earthquake and seeks the assistance of Governor Brown to proclaim a State of Emergency. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to ratify the proclamation on Tuesday, April 8.
The Governor’s State of Emergency and subsequent request for a Presidential Declaration of Emergency may enable funding to become available to the County of Orange, as well as all eligible community members and businesses.
The 5.1 magnitude earthquake and related seismic events caused significant impacts to multiple communities in Orange County, including personal injuries and more than $10.5 million in damage and response costs. Response and recovery efforts continue as Orange County communities repair structural and non-structural property damage; remove hazardous materials; clear debris; repair and replace utilities; stabilize slopes; conduct emergency roadwork and repair public right of way areas, among other protective measures.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Management Division will work closely with the California Office of Emergency Services to approve the initial damage assessments and coordinate the arrival of preliminary damage assessment teams from state and federal agencies.
