Deputy-Involved Shooting in Yorba Linda, Suspect Deceased

YORBA LINDA, CA (February 15, 2016) – A deputy-involved shooting occurred today in the city of Yorba Linda at approximately 1 p.m.

Deputies were investigating a suspicious vehicle at the Extended Stay America at 22711 Oakcrest Circle and contacted a suspect in a vehicle outside the motel. During their contact with the single male occupant of the vehicle, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Continue reading→

OFF-DUTY OCSD DEPUTY ARRESTED ON CHARGES OF ILLEGALLY OBTAINING PRESCRIPTION PILLS BY FRAUD

SANTA ANA – An off-duty Orange County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested today on charges of illegally obtaining prescription pills by lying to doctors about what prescription pills he was already taking. Mark Wayne Hewlett, 35, Yorba Linda, is charged with five felony counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, subterfuge, and/or concealment. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from probation to a maximum sentence of five years and eight months in jail. Hewlett is in custody on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. If the defendant bails out, the arraignment date and time is subject to change.

On five occasions between Sept. 9, 2013, and Nov. 15, 2013, Hewlett is accused of going to four different doctors to obtain a prescription for the controlled substance hydrocodone, more commonly known as Norco or Vicodin. When at a doctor’s office, Hewlett is accused of fraudulently omitting that he was recently prescribed and currently taking hydrocodone in order to illegally obtain an additional prescription of the same drug. Bomb scare shuts down Fullerton train station but no bomb was found

Police evacuated an Amtrak train in Fullerton Sunday evening in response to a bomb threat, according to ABC News.

The train was evacuated at the Fullerton Station at 120 E. Santa Fe Ave. because Amtrak said a suspicious device was also found on board, according to CBS News. Continue reading→

Villa Park High School Coach Arrested for Sexual Misconduct with Students

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (February 26, 2015) – On Wednesday, February 25, 2015, Orange County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Unit (SVU) investigators arrested Dwayne Jordan Richardson, 19, Fullerton, following allegations he engaged in sexual misconduct with two female minor high school students. Richardson is a “walk-on” girls’ basketball coach at Villa Park High School and does not teach at the school.

On Thursday, February 25, 2015, the Villa Park High School Resource Officer obtained information about the alleged sexual misconduct. The Sheriff’s Department’s SVU responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. Following the preliminary investigation, it is believed Richardson engaged in sexual misconduct with a female minor student who attends Villa Park High School and a student at El Dorado High School in the city of Placentia. Based on information obtained during the investigation, investigators suspect Richardson has engaged in sexual misconduct with at least one of the minor students since June 2014. Continue reading→

Suspects Arrested for Robbery at Verizon Wireless Retail Store

YORBA LINDA, Calif. – (January 28, 2015) – On Wednesday, January 28, 2015, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Tyler Mason, 18, Riverside; Quinten Carr, 22, Riverside and Jshaun Jackson, 22, Moreno Valley; in connection with an armed robbery at the Verizon Retail Store located in the 20600 block of Yorba Linda Boulevard. The suspects were taken into custody in the area of Imperial Highway and Bastanchury Road, after deputies saw a Nissan sedan matching the description of the suspect vehicle.

At approximately 9:50 a.m., deputies responded to a robbery in progress at the Verizon Retail Store. The suspects entered the store and demanded cellular phones while holding the lone employee at gunpoint. The suspects fled the store and left the area in the Nissan sedan. During the preliminary investigation, a witness provided deputies with a suspect vehicle description. Several minutes later, deputies saw the vehicle occupied by Mason, Carr and Jackson. Mason and Jackson were taken into custody near the vehicle after a short foot pursuit; Carr was located in the area approximately two hours later following set of a perimeter and systematic search by deputies. Orange County Sheriff’s Department Operation Aims At Improving Motorcycle Safety

SANTA ANA, California (September 5, 2014) – The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations on both Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th in an effort to lower deaths and injuries.

Extra deputies will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes are more likely to occur. They will be looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle accidents. Examples are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, or making illegal turns, which California collision data reveals are the primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes. Investigators Seeking Public’s Assistance Identifying Theft Suspect

YORBA LINDA, Calif. – (August 26, 2014) – On Friday, August 22, 2014, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department began investigating a package theft from the porch of a residence in the 24600 block of Las Patranas, Yorba Linda. The theft occurred on Thursday, August 21 at approximately 11:00 a.m., while the resident was away from the home. The package contained a cellular phone valued at approximately $600.

Based on surveillance video, the suspect approached the front door and rang the doorbell. When nobody came to the door after several seconds, the suspect picked up a UPS package from the porch and is seen walking away down the driveway. There was no vehicle seen; however, investigators believe he got into a vehicle and left the area. Continue reading→

DUI Enforcement Operations Planned this Weekend

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (July 17, 2014) – Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department DUI Task Force will be deploying this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in the Department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign.

DUI Saturation Patrols will deploy on Friday, July 18th at 7:00 pm until Saturday, July 19th at 3:00 am in the cities of Stanton, Yorba Linda and Villa Park. These patrols will be targeting areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and/or arrests. “Don’t drink and drive or you will be arrested for DUI,” said Deputy Shane Stewart of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Bureau. “This is a ‘Zero Tolerance’ crackdown so Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over!” Continue reading→

This Fourth of July, ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (July 2, 2014) – This Fourth of July families and friends will gather to celebrate our country with parades, parties and fireworks. For many people the celebration includes alcohol, but the holiday quickly goes from festive to fatal when people choose to drive after drinking.

To crack down on drug and alcohol impaired driving this Fourth of July the ‘Avoid the 38’ DUI Task Force will be out in full force, aggressively targeting those who put lives in danger. The DUI task force will be deploying deputies and officers to DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints in the cities of Buena Park, Cypress, Irvine and Laguna Niguel, and DUI saturation patrols in the cities of Anaheim, Brea, Irvine, Orange, Westminster, CSU Fullerton, and several cities within the Sheriff’s Department contract area. Suspect Arrested in Yorba Linda Cold Case Homicide

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (May 14, 2014) – On Sunday, May 11, 2014 Orange County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Paulino Olmos Gonzalez, 48, on charges of murder in connection with a 1991 homicide that occurred in the city of Yorba Linda. Gonzalez was identified as a suspect following a recent re-examination of DNA evidence collected and stored at the time of the initial investigation. Following the DNA match, Gonzalez was located in federal custody in the state of Texas serving a federal sentence.

On November 3, 1991, Gonzalez is alleged to have been involved in the shooting death of Salvador Murillo, 50, in a rural area of Yorba Linda comprised of orange groves and oil wells. Murillo died of an apparent gunshot wound and his death was determined to be a homicide. Responsibility for the investigation was transferred last year from the Brea Police Department when Yorba Linda began contracting the Sheriff’s Department for police services. Continue reading→
