Supporters of those arrested on January 18, 2014 in Fullerton are meeting tomorrow at 8 AM at the North Justice Center, located at 1275 N Berkeley Ave., in Fullerton, to protest the arrest of the 14 protesters who were arrested.
Supporters are looking for people to come inside and sit quietly with them in the courtroom to show the court that they have large numbers of people supporting them and they need people outside to protest and be loud. Continue reading

A day after being found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter and excessive force in the death of Kelly Thomas, Jay Cicinelli told the Orange County Register he wants to return to his former job and will take the legal steps necessary to try to make that happen. Cicinelli, 41, was fired in July 2012, about a year after his involvement in the July 5, 2011, confrontation between Thomas and police officers at the Fullerton Transportation Center that resulted in Thomas’ death.
There is NO WAY the community can stand for this! Cicinelli may have been excused by a lame jury but we saw what he did to Kelly Thomas – it was captured on video. Nobody wants this guy back in a police uniform – in Fullerton or anywhere else. Continue reading
Inside a packed, tense Santa Ana courtroom, former Fullerton Police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli have been found not guilty of murdering Kelly Thomas, the homeless Fullerton resident who died after being brutally beaten by Ramos, Cicinelli, and several other officers in July 2011, according to the OC Weekly.

The Death of Kelly Thomas Was No Anomaly

Law enforcement historically has been asked to deal with many sociological issues that, quite frankly, we either have not been adequately trained for or don’t have the appropriate resources to fix. Notably, one of the most difficult issues is the question of how to work with people who are homeless, many of whom have mental illness and/or drug abuse issues.
The beating and death of Kelly Thomas by Fullerton police officers caused outrage and backlash not just in Orange County where I live, but across the nation. Ron Thomas, Kelly’s dad, ensured accountability by snapping this shocking photograph. The incident resulted in the criminal prosecution of several officers and a trial which is exposing the stigma associated with drug addiction, mental illness and the culture of law enforcement made worse by the drug war. You need look no further than the online comment sections of police magazines to see the callous language that surrounds the discussion of drug policies, drug addicts or even the death of Thomas. It was two years ago Friday (July 5) that a mentally ill homeless man was involved in a violent confrontation with Fullerton police officers. Kelly Thomas died five days later. Ex-Fullerton police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli since have been charged in connection with Thomas’ death and are set to go to trial on October 18, according to Southern California Public Radio.
Kelly Thomas’ family has organized a community candlelight vigil to take place tonight, July 5, 2013, at 7 pm, at Kelly’s Corner in Fullerton to mark the 2 year anniversary of Kelly Thomas being beaten to death by six Fullerton police officers.

Apparently several Fullerton residents learned nothing from the murder of homeless resident Kelly Thomas by a few Fullerton police officers. Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who is currently the Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, has pushed the County into paying $3.1 million for a 29,000-square-foot building on two acres on South State College Boulevard, to be used as a permanent year-round homeless shelter, according to the Voice of OC.
Kudos to Nelson for doing something when so few cities in Orange County are doing anything. The homeless in Orange County are expected to weather the elements, where they are exposed to dangers that in the past two years have included the Fullerton police and a crazed killer. Why not give them somewhere safe and warm to sleep at night? Continue reading
