Troy came into the crosstown rivalry game looking to remain undefeated in league and they did so with a 49-41 win over Fullerton.
Troy came out of the gates aggressive on defense, as guard Alec Sinekhustled back for a chase-down block and center Cole Yauney patrolled the paint altering shots and picking up a block.
Recognizing the length of the Troy defenders, Fullerton guard Terry Kangdrove inside for a scoop layup high over the outstretched arms of Yauney. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 10-10.
In the second quarter, Stone Sinek, Fullerton coach Scott Sinek’s son, hit a layup and J. Rodriguez hit a three pointer to put the Indians up by five.
The Warriors (9-9, 2-0) answered back as Jared Reyes got a steal and finished a toughlayup inside.Ty Lassiter scored another layup and Reyes hit a three pointer to cap the run.
Troy applied full court pressure but Fullerton guard Kang got separation from his man, split the defense, and finished a layup high off the glass to end the half. Fullerton still trailed by four as Troy led 28-24.

Led by high scoring performances from seniors Austin Carter and Sean Murphy Sonora rebounded from a loss against La Habra with a 72-56 win over Sunny Hills.
Murphy gave Sonora (18-3, 2-1) a quick lead in the first quarter with his his first of seven 3-pointers on the night.
Shortly after Murphy’s make from beyond the arc, senior Bruce Rutledge drained a 3-pointer of his own for the Raiders to boost them to an early 6-0 lead.
Though the Raiders were off to a hot start, the Lancers (12-9, 1-2) didn’t stay scoreless much longer.
A basket by senior Luke Ross got the Lancers on the board before the Raiders could increase their lead into double digits.
As the first quarter transpired the Lancers got over their slow start and cut Sonoras lead to 3.
Just as it seemed like the lancers might tie the game up back to back 3-pointers by the Raiders made sure the quarter ended with Sonora in the Lead.
The second quarter began with big plays from both Freeway League teams.
Murphy hit his second 3-pointer of the night and moments later his third to put the Raiders up by 13.
The Lancers responded through a slam dunk by Ross …read more

A first half goal by defender Victoria Avila helped the Sunny Hills Lady Lancers secure a 2-0 victory over the Sonora Raiders in their first Freeway League game of the season.
The Lady Lancers sought to take the attacking initiative very early on in the game with quick and almost always forward going passes.
The Raiders found themselves consistently on the defensive in their own half due to the Lady Lancers control of the ball and attacking schemes such as long throw ins into Sonoras penalty box.
On most of the occasions Sonora players had the ball at their feet they had little choice but to try to clear it into Lancer territory or send a long ball to a lone forward due to intense pressure from Sunny Hills forwards and midfielders.
Many of the clearances by Sonora defenders and midfielders were consistently recovered at if not before the halfway line by Sunny Hills defenders, who almost immediately sent the ball to a teammate in Raider territory.
The impact of the Lady Lancers offensive intensity started to show when a strike by midfielder Kendall Hart rattled the top post of Sonoras goal, and also through the Lancers rising corner kick count.

Sonora High School girls basketball remains undefeated in Freeway League play after dominating Sunny Hills 61-18.
Meghann Henderson began the game with 11 straight unanswered points for the Raiders (13-5, 3-0) in what culminated in a first quarter that ended in a 23-5 Sonora lead.
Throughout the opening quarter Sonora controlled the paint through Henderson on the bothsides of the ball and the tempo of the game through a very effective full court press that forced Sunny Hills (12-7, 1-2) to commit several turnovers.
Henderson did it all in the first quarter from converting shot after shot and making assist on one side of the court to getting blocks and steals on the other side of the court.
The Lady Lancers struggled to find open shots in the first quarter and didn’t score until over halfway into the opening quarter.
The second quarter only saw the Raiders lead grow even more,
Lainie James scored 8 straight points for Sonora to start the quarter.
The full court press was just as effective for Sonora as in the first quarter and continued to cause turnover troubles for Sunny Hills.
Constant double teams and plays to strip the ball from their opponent led to several points off …read more

Many of you may recall that during my campaign for Fullerton City Council I wrote an Open Letter to Jennifer Fitzgerald. I’d like to revisit the issue of Mrs. Fitzgerald’s oft-repeated myth of a balanced budget.
On her website as well as on campaign literature she made the point that our budget is balanced. I offer as evidence a screen-grab from her campaign website from 22 October 2016;
I won’t re-litigate the whole letter here but suffice it to say I wasn’t happy about her Public Relations spin on our overspending by at least 43 Million Dollars during her tenure.
I’m bring this all up due to agenda item #2 from last night’s Council Meeting. The council voted 5-0 to receive and file the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ending 30 June 2016. Inside the CAFR was one little nugget really stood out to me when reading the report.
Let’s see if you can spot it;
Did you spot it?
Okay, I suppose I can give you a hint; we spent more than we received. …read more
