The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce works with local government and landowners to assure that sufficient housing is available within the city and surrounding areas to accommodate economic development in Fullerton. To that end, the Fullerton Chamber supports policies that facilitate and assist the creation of Laurel Homes, a new residential community proposed by Watt Communities at 3125 N. Laurel Avenue.

The aforementioned proposed residential project promotes the highest and best use of land and best practices when meeting the need for housing in Fullerton. The development would contribute to the availability of a full range of housing options necessary to accommodate Fullerton’s population and economic growth. Furthermore, it would help to provide the necessary supply of homes to meet employers’ workforce needs.

Changing the zoning on the proposed home site would allow construction of 32 homes and would generate additional property tax income for Fullerton. Fullerton Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Theresa Harvey asserted that the project would also create ongoing economic development benefits for the city as a result of the generation of sales tax captured through the spending habits of the new homeowners.

The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce, has announced its support of a proposal set forth to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Women’s Business Ownership to establish the Orange County Women’s Business Center (OCWBC) within California State University, Fullerton Mihaylo College of Business and Economics for the purpose of offering technical and leadership assistance, capital infusion, and coordination of services targeting women-owned and women-controlled small businesses in Orange County.

As the largest Chamber of Commerce in North Orange County, Fullerton Chamber of Commerce considers the OCWBC a valuable addition and compliment to existing partner organizations in the growing effort to ensure the advancement of women entrepreneurs and to expand the economic impact of Orange County’s women-owned enterprises. The Chamber is committed to supporting the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics’ proposed initiative.

In the United States, more than 9.1 million firms are owned by women, employing nearly 7.9 million individuals, and generating $1.4 trillion in sales as of 2014. Furthermore, one in five businesses with annual revenues of more than $1 billion are owned by women. U.S. Chamber of Commerce vice president of congressional and public affairs Ron Eidshaug will provide an update on policy and the political landscape in Washington, DC at the NOCLA (North Orange County Legislative Alliance) meeting on August 6, touching on:

• factors that have led to stalemate in Congress, including issues such as redistricting, increasingly partisan districts, and the lack of trust among the White House, House and Senate;
• bills where agreement has been reached, although with great difficulty;
• the sometimes dim prospects for key bills to be passed before the end of 2014;
• the impending election;
• why it is important that the business community not give into frustration with Congress, and continue to press their members for action; and
• a look to down-the-road issues, such as entitlements, that are increasingly limiting the ability of Congress to affect change.

Orange County Water District (OCWD) Board Member and Fullerton City Councilwoman Jan Flory and OCWD General Manager Mike Markus will provide an update on threats to OC’s groundwater basin, explain how OCWD is trying to work with businesses, community groups and regulators to address these threats moving forward, and answer any questions.
