Free Seminar Offers Help from Nonprofit Experts on July 14
Nonprofit managers and others who have questions or would like more information about state tax laws are invited to attend a free tax seminar in Fullerton on Monday, July 14, 2014. California State Board of Equalization (BOE) Vice Chair Michelle Steel, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce and California State University, Fullerton are sponsoring this free event.
Representatives from the BOE, Employment Development Department, Franchise Tax Board, and the Office of the California Attorney General will offer informative presentations on sales and use tax for nonprofits, compliance for exempt organizations, employment taxes and nonprofits, property tax exemptions and nonprofits, and regulations of charities.

The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) has presented Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) with the 2014 “Legislator of the Year” Award for both authoring and supporting legislation that will help create new jobs and business opportunities in California.
The Los Angeles Chapter cited Senator Huff for his deep understanding of infrastructure and education issues that are of importance to the engineering community and for the Senator’s efforts to create new jobs and business opportunities by increasing the number of private contracts that are awarded for state funded infrastructure projects.
“We believe in promoting an environment that results in the positive development of our local communities by influencing regulations and sources of project funding to enhance business opportunities,” said Kelly Asper, Executive Director of the ACEC Los Angeles County Chapter. “Senator Huff not only understands the importance of what we do, he is aware of the positive impact we make for Los Angeles County.”

Fullerton Chamber of Commerce has assembled a panel of local educators to join in conversation focused on trends in education affecting employers today and in the future. The Education Summit will take place on Friday, June 26 at 7:30 a.m. at the Fullerton Marriott located at 2701 E. Nutwood Ave. on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
How are budget cuts impacting educational outcomes? What are local schools doing to remain competitive in a global environment? Can our schools continue to produce job ready employees? What is the role of Common Core in developing tomorrow’s workforce? Will changes in education delay college graduations? Learn about these questions and more at this informative summit.
Claire C. Cavallaro, dean College of Education at CSU Fullerton; Rajen Vurdien, president of Fullerton College; George Giokaris, superintendent of Fullerton Joint Union High School District; and Robert Pletka, superintendent of Fullerton School District will discuss trends in education in Fullerton and the state, which has implications for every employer. The panel will be moderated by Sarah Hill, assistant professor of political science at CSU Fullerton.

Cal State Fullerton and its center for sustainability are joining other county agencies Saturday, May 24, in supporting the “P21 Our Future Now Sustainability Showcase.”
The 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. program at Cal State Fullerton will spotlight sustainability experiences among Orange County students from the ages of kindergarten through grade 12.
“This showcase provides an opportunity for the community to see the great work being done by Orange County schools in the area of sustainability. These primary, middle and high school students have been able to participate in hands-on experiences through the efforts and mentoring of public school teachers, faculty, students and community members,” said John Bock, professor of anthropology and director of the CSUF Center for Sustainability.
In addition to displays and exhibitions of student projects, students will speak on their research experiences. Displays and exhibits by local organizations including Discovery Science Center, Ocean Institute, CSUF Recycles, U-ACRE, and Fullerton Arboretum also will be featured.
State Sen. Lou Correa, Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva and Mike Matuda, superintendent of the Anaheim Unified High School District, are among the speakers during the morning program in the Titan Student Union.

Cal State Fullerton is looking for volunteers for the Kids 2.0 STEM Showcase, geared toward 4th-6th graders interested in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The event is being held at CSUF on June 1.
Volunteers are needed to assist with:
Shift 1: 8 a.m.-noon – set-up, directional assistance, exhibit activities
Shift 2: 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. – registration, survey collecting, exhibit activities, lunch assistance
Shift 3: 2-6 p.m. – survey collecting, exhibit activities, tear-down
