Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) will hold a Water Forum next week in the City of Brea, which will feature a number of guest speakers and include a legislative update on negotiations involving a new water bond in the State Legislature. The forum is scheduled to take place Friday, June 6th at the Embassy Suites hotel on E. Birch Street in Brea.
Senator Huff will open the forum with an update on state water bond negotiations at 10:00 AM. Guest speakers will include Ken Manning with the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority, Larry Dick with the Municipal Water District of Orange County, Rick Hansen with Three Valleys Municipal Water District and Adán Ortega from Adán Ortega and Associates. The forum is scheduled to last to 12:00 PM.

Three Fullerton Chamber of Commerce and California Chamber of Commerce-opposed “job killer” bills have passed their house of origin, but two others failed in the Senate. Job killer” bills moving on to the next house mandate that all employers provide paid sick leave, make contracting entities liable for the contractor’s wage-and-hour violations, and tie the minimum wage to inflation.
Bills falling short of votes needed to pass the Senate would have significantly limited in-state energy development or increased corporate tax rates.
Paid Sick Leave
Moving from the Assembly to the Senate is AB 1522 (Gonzalez; D-San Diego), which increases employer mandates by requiring all employers, large and small, to provide all employees in California with paid sick leave. AB 1522 also threatens employers with statutory penalties, as well as litigation for alleged violations.
In opposing AB 1522, the CalChamber notes that although many employers voluntarily offer sick leave for full-time employees, expanding that benefit to mandate paid sick leave for temporary, seasonal and part-time employees will create a huge burden on employers. The bill also creates a private right of action for employees and unions, thereby dramatically increasing an employer’s risk for legal fees and costs. Cal State Fullerton President Mildred García is among three women honored by the National Hispanic Business Women’s Association as 2014 Business Women of the Year.
García was recognized in the category of community service/education/nonprofits during the 14th annual event held May 28 at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel in Anaheim.
The purpose of the association is to empower and encourage women and business owners to develop and increase their business through educational seminars and speakers, by offering mutual support, the sharing of information, business referrals and networking.
“Cal State Fullerton serves the most female students in the CSU and confers more bachelor’s degrees upon Hispanics than any university in the state,” García noted. “This is a direct result of our inspirational faculty, staff and students, and it is on their behalf that I proudly accept this award.
To help achieve its goals, the association has awarded 128 educational scholarships over the years to deserving students at Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, Cal State LA and other institutions of higher learning.
At the Awards and Scholarship Luncheon, seven of the 18 new scholarships were presented to students from Cal State Fullerton.

The Fox Theatre Fullerton will be holding a screening of the docudramedy “Circle the Wagon,” on June 5 at 8 p.m. The film portrays the vintage Volkswagen subculture of America, a close-knit community for whom the joy of driving is the joy of living.
Prior to the screening, vintage Volkswagens will be on display for movie-goers and spectators alike. The doors to the Fox Theatre will open at 7 p.m. After the screening, there will be a Q & A session with Charlie Pecoraro and fellow filmmakers. Pecoraro, a Fullerton native, spent much of his childhood at his parent’s restaurant, Angelo’s and Vinci’s, which from 1972-1991 was located on the stage of the Fox Theatre. Pecoraro currently lives in Burbank and is a working actor, producer, and drummer.
Tickets for the screening will be sold at the door the day of the event for $5 for those 12 years and older. Cash only.
The film will soon be released on DVD, Netflix, and iTunes.

U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton) issued the following statement after the resignation of U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki:
“There is no doubt that General Eric Shinseki is a patriot and an individual who has spent much of his life in service to our nation. However, misconduct at the Department of Veterans Affairs that has been directly linked to the preventable deaths of veterans is absolutely unacceptable. These abuses occurred during Secretary Shinseki’s tenure, and his resignation was both necessary and appropriate,” said Rep. Royce. “It is critical that incoming leadership at the Department of Veteran Affairs holds those responsible for these travesties accountable, and works with Congress and the White House to ensure similar incidents never occur again.”
Rep. Royce recently voted for the Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act of 2014, legislation that will provide the Secretary of Veterans Affairs greater authority to remove senior executives of the department and hold them accountable for negligence, poor performance, and mismanagement. The bill passed the U.S. House with a large bipartisan majority on May 21, 2014.
