Earlier this year, Representative Ed Royce (R-Fullerton) announced the kickoff of the 2014 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Competition: House App Contest. All high school students who live in, or are eligible to enroll in high schools located in, the 39th district can participate in the competition by developing or designing an application on a platform of their choice. All applications are due tomorrow, April 30.
“The jobs of the 21st century are jobs in STEM,” said Royce. “Focusing first on developing mobile applications for phones, tablets and other computer devices, this Congressional competition will motivate students to explore and create. I’m excited to see what innovative technologies these students develop; the competition could inspire the next Steve Jobs to discover their true passion.”
The Congressional STEM Competition was authorized by H.Res 77 to encourage student participation in STEM fields. Initially, the competition will be in the field of computer science. Participants have the choice of creating a fully-functioning application or designing a detailed mock-up of an application concept. The House App Competition closes on April 30th and will culminate with a celebration in mid-May for the 39th district contest winner.

The Fullerton College Horticulture Department is holding a Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, May 4 from noon to 3 p.m.; and Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Plants available at the sale include, California native and drought tolerant plants, herbaceous perennials, shade plants, house plants, vines, succulents, herbs, and seasonal and perennial vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers.
The Horticulture Department is located off of Berkeley Ave. Free parking will be available.

Stop Fracking Brea, is screening the film Gasland II, by Josh Fox, at Brea Cinema 5 in Brea (453 S. Associated Rd), on May 1st, at 7pm. This film alleges that “Fracking and acidizing oil wells are extreme measures to release oil from old wells or new ones.” Stop Fracking Brea claims that these methods are already being used in Fullerton, Brea, Yorba Linda, La Habra, and other cities in California. They also allege that most of these new methods are not regulated due to 2005 federal exemptions to safe air and water acts.
The Gasland II Debunked video claims that the Gasland films have “willfully and shamefully ignored the determinations of state regulatory agencies, solely to inflate risks and create fear among its viewers.” You can watch that video below: Continue reading
