Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) sent a letter today to Governor Brown, on behalf of the Senate Republican Caucus, urging him not to appeal the recent court ruling being described as one of the biggest civil rights victories in recent history. The “Vergara v. California” ruling handed down last month by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge determined that California’s laws on teacher tenure, dismissal and layoffs are unconstitutional because they violate our children’s constitutional right to an equal education.
The Governor is scheduled to deliver remarks at the 83rd American Federation of Teachers Convention tomorrow in Los Angeles. He has not made any public comment since the Vergara decision was announced on June 10th, 2014.
“We strongly believe an appeal would further disenfranchise inner-city students and those who come from challenging socio-economic circumstances,” Huff wrote. “The proper response would be to take advantage of this historic ruling as an opportunity to promote true education equality and fix California’s broken public school system.”
