Following the announcement that BART employee unions officially went on strike today, Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) and Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway (R-Tulare) issued the following joint statement:
“Make no mistake; this strike will have a significant impact on families and the local economy. Students and teachers won’t be able to attend classes. Worse, the traffic nightmares could impair the ability of police and firefighters to keep us safe.
“We offered a common-sense solution to keep the trains running while contract talks continued. As we recommended weeks ago, the Governor can call an emergency session of the Legislature and enact our proposal. It simply compels unions to honor their no-strike clauses in their contracts which they’d previously agreed to at the bargaining table. Common sense dictates that if other provisions of their contracts, such as salaries and benefits, are being fulfilled, then the no-strike clause should also be honored while negotiations continue.
