Lead by Forward Diego Useda’s two goals in the first half helped propel the Sunny Hills Lancers to a 3-1 win over Troy to open Freeway League play.
Sunny Hills (11-5-1, 1-0) controlled the flow of the first half through organized passing and prolonged periods of possession in the Warrior’s half.
The Lancers passing and possession almost paid off once more when a pass by midfielder Amaury Maldonado put Ujera through on goal but his strike was saved by Warriors goalkeeper Daniel Rodriguez.
Troy dedicated themselves to defense in an attempt to stymie the Lancers offensive intensity, and Rodriguez was tested several more times in the first half by shots from both near and far.
The Warriors (1-9-4, 0-2) could not keep prolonged possession partly due to their defensive layout, but also due to the Lancers persistent pressure without the ball.
Almost every counterattack attempt by the Warriors would be quelled shortly after entering Lancer territory.
On several occasions pressure by the Lancers caused a poor pass by Warriors players that would be either intercepted or head out of bounds.
