Statistics show more and more parents are turning to charter schools to educate their children. According to the California Charter Schools Association (CSA), in the 2013-2014 school year 104 new charter schools opened in California for a total of 1,130. Enrollment grew by more than 10% and an estimated 519,000 students now make up the charter school population. With a substantial amount of autonomy, these schools have been free to use a more innovative approach to teach curriculum and reach benchmarks. To date, shrinking the achievement gap in minority and low-income students has been one of the most widely touted successes among this growing trend of schools since they tend to be located in neighborhoods in which these children reside.
