I am pleased to once again be the author of a Senate Resolution celebrating National School Choice Week in California. More than 5,500 events will take place across all fifty states to raise awareness for school choice during National School Choice Week, which takes place January 26 through February 1.
Although California has a limited embrace of school choice through charter schools, school districts of choice and open enrollment, most students face limited options. Current law assigns students to schools based on their zip code; and as a result, California does not have an equal or fair distribution of education benefits.
This means low-income and middle class families are put at a disadvantage if their assigned school does not meet their academic needs. These families are literally trapped in …read more
