In a recent column Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, calls Assembly Bill 857 “the most direct assault on direct democracy in California in the last 100 years.” Yet our Assembly Member Sharon Quirk-Silva voted for it.
How bad is this bill? This is what the San Francisco Chronicle said about AB 857 in an editorial this past Sunday: “Something is seriously amiss with any initiative reform bill opposed by both the conservative Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, which gained its wings on the populist revolt of Proposition 13, and California Common Cause, a nonpartisan promoter of transparency and fair play in government.”
As Coupal said in his column, the bill — which is now on Governor Brown’s desk — deserves a quick veto.
